The Surroundings
The Guriezo Valley, an ideal place for rural tourism on the Cantabrian coast, is located between the summer centers of Laredo and Castro Urdiales. With rich landscapes, it offers multiple possibilities for observing nature, rest, and sports activities.
The Agüera River, which runs through the valley, allows for canoeing and flows into a beautiful estuary surrounded by wide beaches with fine sand, such as Oriñón, Arenillas, and Sonabia, among others. The proximity to the coast combines with formidable limestone mountains where rocky outcrops, forests, and evergreen meadows intermingle, providing impressive views.
The History
The history of Guriezo has been marked by the iron industry, with the oldest forges along the Cantabrian coast found along the Agüera. These foundries used charcoal obtained from the forests of Remendón, where remnants of the charcoal kilns can still be found. Worthy of mention is the Yseca forge, which dates back to the 13th century.
Among the churches of Guriezo, the most representative one stands on a promontory covered by a lush relict holm oak forest that surrounds the temple. San Vicente de la Maza, from the 16th and 17th centuries, was the seat of the ecclesiastical chapter of the valley.
On the mountain of Las Nieves, visible from anywhere in Guriezo, there is a small hermitage dedicated to the Virgin. For many centuries, the people of Guriezo have climbed the mountain to celebrate a pilgrimage on August 5th in honor of their patron saint.
The most representative manor houses are the so-called Casa Pinta, also in Rioseco and very close to the church, with two angular towers of two floors and a hall with lowered arches, and the Marroquín Palace, with a cylindrical tower in the style of a small castle. The facades are almost always accompanied by family crests.
